THE MODEL: I built these robots from a
couple of inexpensive Japanese kits of unknown origin.
THE SCALE: The models are built to a scale
of 3.5 MM = 1 foot.
CONSTRUCTION: I began by converting the kits so
they appear as if they were maneuvered by a human inside them. I used HO model
railroad figures inside them. The first one was designed as if it operates in
the swamp. The second one was designed as if it operates in the desert. I used a
variety of items to detail them, including styrene. The clear hatch covers were made
by vacuum forming theatrical gels (the type used over lights) over a form. They
were painted with Poly S and Tester brand paints. I used a piece of wood I found
in my backyard on the swamp diorama. The snake was made from Sculpy brand clay.
I used Woodland Scenics ground foam for the ground cover. The ground cover on
the desert diorama was made from Woodland Scenics railroad ballast.
